Heatwave in India: Rain relief to continue today in Delhi-NCR, Telangana, Bihar, Karnataka

Noida and Gurugram are currently under a yellow alert

A western disturbance is set to impact northwest India, bringing much-needed relief from the intense heat with rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds expected on April 11, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said.

Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 25.9°C on Thursday. The maximum temperature is expected to rise to around 39°C on Friday. However, this brief spike will be followed by a dip, as the western disturbance influences weather patterns across the region.

“Under the influence of the Western Disturbance, rainfall followed by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds is likely over northwest India during April 11. As a result, prevailing heatwave conditions are expected to ease significantly,” the IMD stated in its latest bulletin.

Yellow alert issued in NCR

Noida and Gurugram are currently under a yellow alert. The IMD has forecast cloudy skies, scattered showers, and winds reaching speeds of up to 50 km/h until April 12. These conditions are expected to bring down temperatures by approximately 2°C, providing a break from the early summer heat.

The department has advised the residents to stay prepared for changing conditions, with mild rain and thunderstorms predicted on Friday. The weather is expected to remain pleasant through Saturday, before heatwave conditions potentially return by April 15.

Cloudy skies and light rain in Karnataka

Bengaluru is expected to see partly cloudy skies on Friday, with the minimum and maximum temperatures hovering around 22°C and 32°C respectively.

The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) shared a weather report for the next four days and stated, "Thunderstorm, lightning is likely across the state today & tomorrow, scattered moderate rain over coastal, hilly and south interior districts. Moderate rain with scattered showers is likely over North Interior districts."

Heavy rain and lightning forecast in Bihar

The IMD has issued an 'orange alert' for multiple districts in Bihar, forecasting heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over the next two days.

Districts under the alert include Darbhanga, East Champaran, Gopalganj, West Champaran, Kishanganj, Araria, Supaul, Gaya, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Nalanda, Nawada, and Patna. The IMD has predicted thunderstorms with lightning and wind speeds ranging between 40 to 50 km/h in these regions on Friday and Saturday.

Notably, heavy rain, lightning and thunderstorms claimed the lives of at least 25 people in the state on Thursday. According to an official statement from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), Nalanda reported the highest number of casualties with 18 deaths, while Siwan reported two. One death each was confirmed in Katihar, Darbhanga, Begusarai, Bhagalpur, and Jehanabad.

Thunderstorms across several districts in Telangana

The IMD has predicted thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (30–40 km/h) on April 11. Districts under alert include Jayashankar Bhupalapally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Sangareddy, Medak, and Kamareddy.
