The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall across parts of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar on September 17, forecasting widespread showers and potential flooding concerns in several regions of the country.
According to Live Mint, the weather agency has also highlighted a flash flood risk in certain watersheds and neighbourhoods over the next 24 hours, particularly where soils are already saturated.
Uttarakhand districts under watch
Uttarakhand remains a major concern, with districts including Almora, Bageshwar, Chamoli, Champawat, Dehradun, Nainital, Pauri Garhwal, Pithoragarh, Rudraprayag, Tehri Garhwal and Uttarkashi identified as vulnerable.
The IMD has cautioned that heavy rain in these areas could trigger surface runoff and waterlogging, intensifying the risk of flash floods. Local authorities have been advised to stay on alert for possible inundation.
Forecast for north, east and central India
Moderate showers accompanied by thunderstorms are expected in several northern and central states. Uttarakhand is set to see heavy rainfall today, while eastern Uttar Pradesh is likely to witness intense showers between September 17 and 19.
Bihar too is forecast to receive heavy rainfall through September 19, with isolated very heavy downpours predicted today. Similarly, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are bracing for very heavy rainfall on September 17 and 18.
West Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand are also expected to see significant showers today. Rainfall activity is likely to intensify across Vidarbha, Odisha and East Madhya Pradesh, as per Live Mint report.
Northeast and southern regions
Northeastern states will reportedly see moderate to heavy rainfall in the coming days. Assam and Meghalaya are forecast to receive rain throughout the week, while Arunachal Pradesh will see scattered activity except on September 18. Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are expected to experience heavy showers between September 19 and 22.
In the south, the IMD has predicted isolated heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu between September 17 and 19. Telangana, Rayalaseema and parts of Karnataka are also likely to witness thunderstorms and strong surface winds. Coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining regions may experience wind speeds of 30–40 kmph for the next five days.
Western India outlook
Rain-bearing clouds are expected over Maharashtra and the Konkan coast. Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada are likely to receive heavy rainfall on September 17, while Konkan and Goa may see intensified showers on September 17 and 18.
Delhi to remain mostly dry
For Delhi, conditions will remain relatively stable. On September 17, the sky is expected to be partly cloudy with maximum temperatures ranging between 33–35 degree Celsius and minimum between 23–25 degree Celsius.
Temperatures on September 18 and 19 are likely to dip slightly, hovering below normal by 1–2 degree Celsius. Winds from the southeast will prevail, with speeds up to 15 kmph in the mornings.
