A Government Railway Police (GRP) sub-inspector was placed under suspension on Wednesday following widespread outrage over a viral video that captured him allegedly assaulting and hurling obscene abuses at a tea vendor at Mathura Railway Station.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday morning, has sparked a fierce debate on social media regarding the misuse of authority by uniformed personnel.
The altercation took place at Platform No. 8 at a stall named Krishna Foods. The vendor, identified as Suraj, was reportedly cleaning his stall around 8 am when GRP sub-inspector Vivek Kumar approached him and requested tea.
When Suraj informed the officer that it would take a few minutes as he was still finishing his opening tasks, the sub-inspector allegedly lost his temper and left the spot.
According to reports, Kumar returned to the stall at approximately 8.15 am. When the vendor once again requested him to wait briefly, the officer is said to have lost control.
The CCTV footage, which has since been widely circulated on social media, shows the officer engaging in a heated exchange, using abusive language and slapping the vendor multiple times. In the video, the sub-inspector can be heard issuing a severe threat, saying, "I'll pee in your mouth."
The footage triggered an immediate and intense backlash online, with users condemning the officer's behaviour and questioning the extent of authority wielded by law enforcement officials.
Taking swift cognisance of the viral video, senior GRP officials reportedly initiated disciplinary action against the sub-inspector. Circle Officer Rajesh Dixit confirmed the development, stating that the officer has been placed under suspension pending a thorough inquiry into the matter.
Meanwhile, GRP station in-charge Jitendra Kumar noted that as of Wednesday evening, no formal written complaint had been received from the vendor, Suraj. Despite the lack of an official complaint, the departmental action was initiated based on the evidence available in the video footage.
