Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled Bengaluru’s much-anticipated Yellow Line of Namma Metro on Sunday, marking a major milestone in the city’s public transport infrastructure.

The 19.15-km elevated corridor, constructed at a cost of Rs 7,160 crore, connects RV Road in the south to Bommasandra in the east, traversing key commercial and residential hubs. According to NDTV, the line is projected to serve up to eight lakh passengers daily, offering a faster alternative to Bengaluru’s notoriously congested roadways.

The new route, featuring 16 stations, is expected to significantly ease traffic bottlenecks, particularly around the perennially gridlocked Silk Board Junction. It will also improve connectivity to major employment centres such as Electronic City and Bommasandra Industrial Area, home to corporate giants like Infosys, Biocon and TCS. Authorities have hailed the Yellow Line as a “game-changer” for the city’s southern transport network, with travel time to Electronic City slashed from up to two hours by road to just 45 minutes.

Commercial operations on the Yellow Line commence from August 11, with three cutting-edge driverless trains plying between 5 am and 11 pm at 25-minute intervals. Officials anticipate frequency will further improve to 20 minutes later this month, NDTV reported.

Fares will mirror existing Namma Metro pricing, ranging from Rs 10 for short hops to Rs 90 for end-to-end journeys, including transfers to the Purple Line. For instance, a journey from RV Road to Jayadeva Hospital will cost just Rs 10, while traversing the longest route from Whitefield (on the Purple Line) to Bommasandra will require a Rs 90 ticket.

During the high-profile event held at the International Institute of Information Technology campus in Electronics City, Prime Minister Modi also launched the Bengaluru-Belagavi Vande Bharat Express and laid the foundation for the Namma Metro’s third phase, a planned 44.65-km expansion valued at Rs 15,610 crore.

As per NDTV report, this future phase could benefit up to 25 lakh residents in the city’s southern precincts, further accelerating Bengaluru’s progress towards a truly integrated public transport network.

The Yellow Line stations includes several critical interchange points, such as RV Road (Green Line) and Jayadeva Hospital, which will eventually link to the upcoming Pink Line. Other notable stops along the route are BTM Layout, HSR Layout and Electronic City-I, strategically positioned to cater to both residential and corporate commuters.
