The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking has rolled out special plans to ensure hassle-free travel and power supply during the upcoming Ganeshotsav. As part of the measures, 26 extra buses will run between August 27 and September 5, a period that includes Gauri immersion and Anant Chaturdashi, when the festive crowds are at their highest, The Indian Express reported.

These buses will mostly run at night, between 10:30 pm and 6 am, as thousands of devotees move between pandals and immersion points during late hours. The buses will connect several important spots in the city, including Oshiwara, JJ Hospital, Jijamata Park, Shivaji Nagar Terminus, CSMT, Deonar Depot, Mazgaon, Kalachowki, Santacruz Depot, Dadar Railway Station, Opera House, Shivaji Park, and others.

To manage the rush, BEST will also post bus inspectors and traffic officers at crowded stops, especially at Parel, Lalbaug, Girgaon, and Khetwadi, which are known for their large Ganpati pandals.

Apart from transport, BEST has also made arrangements for street lighting and electricity supply. Following BMC’s directions, as many as 2,723 lights will be installed across 71 procession routes, 19 immersion spots, and 39 artificial ponds. At key visarjan sites, 15 permanent electric towers have been set up to make sure there is enough lighting for the large crowds. To prepare for emergencies, eight diesel generators will be kept ready so that the power supply is not interrupted.

For immersions that take place at sea, BEST will provide 19 powerful searchlights to help lifeguards carry out rescue operations if needed. Officers and staff will also be on duty at all immersion locations to closely monitor electricity supply.

BEST has also published an information booklet listing the rules for Ganesh mandals that want temporary electricity connections. The booklet, which also gives details of the transport and lighting plan, has been uploaded on the BEST website.

“Every year our focus is to make the festival safe and comfortable for citizens. This year too, we have planned better lighting, backup supply, and additional buses to serve people,” The Indian Express quoted a BEST spokesperson as saying.
