A suspected bomb-making activity on a rooftop in the Airfield area ended in disaster, claiming two lives and leaving two others critically injured. A video of the explosion has also surfaced, showing flames and chaos.

Sehnawaz Malik (26), a history-sheeter, suffered severe burn injuries in the January 27 crude bomb explosion and died during treatment on February 4. His mother, Lizatun Bibi (51), who was also seriously injured, passed away on February 10 at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.

Malik’s fiancée, Truptimayee Mahal (23), and associate Amiya Mallick (27) remain hospitalised at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar. Police said Malik’s burns were critical and he succumbed despite treatment.

Explosion while preparing bombs

Authorities believe the blast occurred while one or more crude bombs were being assembled on Malik’s rooftop. Malik had seven previous criminal cases, including attempted murder and Arms Act violations.

He was released on bail about six months ago following a political clash in Nayapalli and remained under police watch. The intensity of the explosion prompted a preliminary inquiry by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which later ruled out terror or radicalisation links, though it checked for any larger conspiracy.

Forensic findings and investigation

Forensic officials said highly explosive materials might have been involved. Preliminary tests suggested the possible use of hexahydro trinitro triazine, a compound linked to high explosives.

Bomb disposal teams, fire personnel, and forensic experts collected remnants and seized raw materials suspected to be for bomb-making. Police are investigating whether Malik acted alone or had accomplices and whether the bombs were meant for criminal or political purposes.

Security stepped up in Bhubaneswar

Tenants of the three-storey rented building said they had no idea about the alleged illegal activity. “Everyone’s lives were endangered,” one resident said.

Following the blast, police increased vigilance in sensitive areas of Bhubaneswar. Meanwhile, a video showing the moments of the explosion has surfaced. Authorities are verifying the footage as part of their ongoing probe.
