Heavy rains lashed Hyderabad on Wednesday, disrupting daily life and causing widespread traffic jams. The downpour, which began in the afternoon and continued late into the night, brought dark skies and waterlogging to several areas across the city, The Hindu reported.

According to the Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS), Santosh Nagar received the highest rainfall at 87.3 mm by 10 p.m., followed by Malakpet (82.5 mm), Saroor Nagar (77.8 mm), Moosarambagh (75.8 mm), and LB Nagar (69 mm). Other areas like Champapet, Amberpet, Yakutpura, and Azampura also recorded rainfall above 55 mm.

In Khammam district, lighting claimed the life of a farmer on Wednesday amid heavy downpour and thunderstorms, Hans India reported.

Traffic chaos across Hyderabad

The heavy rains led to waterlogging in many parts of Hyderabad, resulting in traffic snarls during peak hours. Areas such as Begumpet, Paradise, Parade Ground, Marredpally, Tarnaka, Habsiguda, and Uppal faced severe congestion.

Localities including Uppal, Nacharam, Mallapur, AS Rao Nagar, Sainikpuri, Medchal, Jeedimetla, Malakpet, and Chandrayangutta witnessed particularly intense rainfall.

Hyderabad and Rachakonda traffic police, along with Disaster Response Force (DRF) teams from the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA), were deployed at major intersections to assist commuters to manage the situation, according to the report by The Hindu.

More rain likely till May 28

The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad, has forecast that Telangana will continue to receive rainfall till May 28. Gusty winds between 30 and 40 kmph are also expected during this period, News Meter reported.

The IMD attributed the weather pattern to an upper air circulation and trough system. Thunderstorms are expected across all districts on Thursday, with a possibility of hailstorms in Khammam, Nalgonda, Mahabubnagar, Sangareddy, and Vikarabad. Hyderabad and Rangareddy may experience light to moderate rainfall, and isolated lightning strikes are also likely.

High alert in Telangana

Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has instructed officials to remain on high alert and take all necessary precautions based on the IMD's warning, The Hans reported. In response, Telangana Health Minister C Damodar Raja Narasimha directed health authorities to ensure that doctors and support staff are available around the clock at all government hospitals.

He also advised hospitals to move pregnant women close to delivery into birth-waiting rooms for better monitoring. Emergency services, including 102 ambulances, have been ordered to stay on standby through the night to respond to any health emergencies promptly.
