Haridwar municipal area will no longer have meat markets as all butcher shops operating within the restricted area will be relocated outside municipal limits. However, non-vegetarian food items will be available outside the prohibited zone.
Currently, around 100 butcher shops operate in Haridwar municipal area, but only a few of them have valid licences, according to a report in The Times of India. Locals have been demanding the relocation of meat markets due to poor hygiene and bad waste disposal.
Haridwar municipal commissioner Nandan Kumar was quoted by TOI, "We have nearly completed the construction of meat shops in Sarai village. So far, 60 shops have been built, and those with valid licences will be relocated there. The remaining illegal shops will be sealed. All butchers have been informed about the relocation."
