The 34-year-old man, Arvind Parihar, who shot dead his wife, Nandini Kewat, outside Roop Singh Cricket Stadium in Gwalior on September 12 has showed no regret during questioning, TOI reported citing the police.
According to the police, Arvind smiled and told officers that he now felt “free from daily quarrels” after killing his wife. One of the interrogating officers said Parihar even went as far as to say that he regretted only one thing, that Nandini did not die in front of him. He claimed he would have felt complete relief had that happened.
Police revealed that Arvind accused his wife of taking his money and cars while being in relationships with other men. What seems to have triggered the murder was a Facebook video Nandini posted four days earlier. In that video, she was seen celebrating the birthday of her boyfriend, Ankush Pathak. Police officials believe this enraged Arvind and pushed him to commit the crime.
On the day of the murder, Nandini had visited the Superintendent of Police’s office with Ankush to lodge a complaint against Arvind. As they were returning, Arvind stopped them near the stadium and fired five rounds from a .315 bore pistol. Four bullets hit Nandini, who was rushed to the hospital but declared dead on arrival.
Police said that even as Nandini lay injured, Arvind went live on Facebook holding his pistol and claimed his wife had filed false cases at the behest of her boyfriend.
Police investigations have revealed that the couple’s relationship had been troubled from the start. Arvind, a resident of Putthi village in Pichore, first met Nandini in 2022 at a beauty parlour. They connected on social media, exchanged messages, and married in 2023 despite knowing about each other’s past.
Nandini was divorced, while Arvind was already married and had two children. Soon after their marriage, fights broke out between them, with both publicly accusing each other of infidelity and insulting each other on social media platforms.
Arvind comes from a farming family that owns about 60 bighas of land. He has two brothers, and his first wife and children continue to live with his parents in Dabra. He had once tried to contest for a district panchayat seat but withdrew later.
Nandini’s post-mortem was done on September 13. Her father, Brijmohan Kewat, at first refused to take her body, insisting that her in-laws should claim it. However, Arvind’s family also refused.
Nandini’s friend Ankush offered to take custody, but police, citing protocol, finally persuaded her father to accept the body.
