In a landmark development poised to reshape the hospitality landscape of Assam’s capital, Guwahati is set to welcome at least 11 five-star hotels over the next two to three years, signalling a robust boost to the state’s tourism and economic ambitions.

The ambitious expansion, driven by the Advantage Assam 2.0 summit and backed by investments to the tune of Rs 500 crore, is expected to usher in a new era of luxury hospitality in the city, often dubbed the gateway to the Northeast. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made the formal announcement on Monday, while attending the Bhumi Pujan ceremony of a Marriott Resort and Spa near the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport.

“Nearly 11 hotels are in the pipeline, including two Marriotts near the airport, two Taj Hotels in Aerocity and a Lemon Tree Hotel on the National Highway. The Radisson Blu Hotel is also expanding with an additional 100 rooms. Furthermore, the Taj Vivanta at Khanapara will be replaced by a new Taj Hotel and four more Marriotts are set to be developed,” CM Sarma was quoted as saying by Assam Tribune.

The Bhumi Pujan marked the formal beginning of the Marriott Resort and Spa project, to be developed by Jonali Construction Private Ltd. The firm had signed an MoU with the Assam government during the Advantage Assam 2.0 summit. Spread across 76 bighas of land, the resort is slated for completion within three years and is expected to create over 500 direct jobs, according to The Sentinal.

Highlighting the strategic importance of these developments, Sarma noted that the hotels' locations near key transit hubs would boost both tourism and business travel. He added that the city’s growing appeal as a venue for destination weddings was also a factor influencing the development of luxury properties.

“Destination weddings are becoming a popular concept and these hotels will help people plan better,” said the Chief Minister, as per Assam Tribune.

While the Marriott Resort and Spa is the immediate focus, the broader plan reflects a significant pivot towards high-end tourism in Assam. In a related move, Assam Tribune reported that Mukesh Ambani has also pledged to set up an Oberoi Hotel in Guwahati — a further sign of confidence from private players in the city’s evolving tourism and business potential.

With almost all the investment proposals from Advantage Assam 2.0 now progressing on the ground, the state government appears keen to convert intent into tangible infrastructure.

The influx of premium hotels is expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities and stimulate local businesses across hospitality, travel, construction and allied sectors. More importantly, it places Guwahati firmly on the map as a future hospitality hub for not just the Northeast, but eastern India at large.
