The killing has sent waves of panic through the local business community. Police officials were cited by TOI as saying that the murder is suspected to be linked to an extortion threat Rulania had received just days prior from the Rohit Godara gang.
This criminal network is known to be active across western Rajasthan, including the Didwana-Kuchaman district. Several other businessmen in the region have reportedly received similar threats recently.
The investigation is now focused on reviewing CCTV footage from surrounding areas to identify and track down the fleeing killer.
The alleged involvement of the Rohit Godara gang points to a worrying pattern of organised crime in the region. The gang's leader, Rawatram Swami, who goes by Rohit Godara, is a notorious gangster from Lunkaransar in Bikaner district. Godara is suspected by police of masterminding the December 2022 killing of gangster Raju Thehat in Sikar.
His influence extends beyond Rajasthan. Godara’s name also emerged in the high-profile investigation into the May 2022 murder of popular Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala. Furthermore, he publicly claimed responsibility for the December 2023 killing of Karni Sena chief Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi.
