A wedding celebration in Jharkhand's East Singhbhum district turned into a scene of mourning on Monday after a 41-year-old guest choked to death on a rasgulla, a popular Indian sweet, at the venue, NDTV reported.

The deceased, identified as Lalit Singh, was attending a wedding feast in Maliyanta village when the incident occurred. According to those present, Singh consumed the syrupy dessert when he suddenly began struggling to breathe, the report said.

Panic erupted as fellow guests rushed to his aid, attempting to dislodge the sweet from his throat manually. However, their efforts proved futile as Singh's condition deteriorated rapidly. His father immediately rushed him to the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Hospital in Jamshedpur, but doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival.

Medical professionals who examined Singh stated that the rasgulla had caused a complete obstruction of his airway. NDTV reported, citing doctors, that the dessert had entirely blocked the passage, cutting off the oxygen supply to his body. Singh is understood to have succumbed within minutes of the sweet becoming lodged.

Following a post-mortem examination, Singh's body was handed over to his family for the last rites.
