A 22-year-old MBA student from Andhra Pradesh was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head, while his friend was left critically injured inside RCI Vidya Vihar Hostel of BIMTECH, a private college in Greater Noida’s Knowledge Park 3 on Tuesday morning, The Indian Express reported.

According to the police, the deceased has been identified as 22-year-old Deepak Kumar, while his friend, 23-year-old Devansh Chauhan is currently battling for his life in the ICU at Greater Noida’s Kailash Hospital. Investigators are still trying to determine who fired the shot, as a revolver was recovered from the room.

As per the report, Devansh had left his home in Agra at around 5.30 am on Tuesday to return to college after a three-day stay. His family had hosted a party at their residence on Saturday to celebrate the retirement of his father, Surendra Singh Chauhan, who was a Circle Officer in the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force and retired on August 31.

The revolver found at the scene was confirmed by his father to be his personal weapon. “I used to keep it inside a locked cupboard at home. I don’t know when he took it out and brought it with him,” Surendra said.

The officer, already shaken by the loss of his wife during the Covid-19 second wave in 2021, expressed his devastation. “Main kiske liye jiyunga agar isko kuch ho gaya toh? Biwi ko main pehle hi kho chuka hoon. (Whom will I live for if something happens to him? I have already lost my wife),” the father was quoted by The Indian Express as saying.

Devansh is the youngest of three siblings. After completing his BTech from a private college in Mathura, he had been preparing for competitive exams before joining BIMTECH for his postgraduate diploma. He had been living in Greater Noida for the past three years. Just a day earlier, he had paid his fees online for the upcoming trimester exams scheduled in ten days.

Both Devansh and Deepak were known as bright students and were among the toppers of their class. According to the students, while they were friends, they were not roommates. The incident took place on the first floor of the boys’ hostel. “Since the incident, the college has asked us not to discuss it,” said one student.

Devansh’s brother, Shivang, recalled how the family last spoke to him. “He took a taxi from near our house. Around 7.30 am, when my father called, he said he was about to reach college. That was the last time we heard his voice,” he said.

According to Shivang, his brother reached the campus around 9.30 am. By 11.26 am, hostel security staff found both students in the room. Around noon, the family was informed by the college that Devansh was “seriously ill” and being rushed to hospital.

As of Tuesday evening, police had not confirmed the sequence of events inside the room or whether it was a case of accident, suicide, or foul play.

In a statement released on Wednesday, BIMTECH said it was deeply saddened by the incident and was cooperating with the police in the investigation.

“In light of the traumatic nature of this incident, we are arranging counselling sessions to help students cope and to reassure them of a safe and supportive environment," the statement read.
