Delhi Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation following a disturbing allegation that a student was attacked by four men, including a non-teaching staff member, on the campus of South Asian University (SAU). The incident has sparked unrest among the student body.
The attack is alleged to have occurred on Sunday when the student was on her way to the campus canteen. According to police officials, her complaint states that she was grabbed by the four men, who also tore her clothes in an attempted assault, as per The Indian Express,
A call regarding the incident was received at the Maidangarhi police station around 3 pm on Monday. Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Ankit Chauhan reportedly confirmed that the call was placed by someone known to the student. The student was subsequently counselled and taken to a hospital for examination before providing a formal statement.
Based on her account, an FIR has been registered under relevant sections of attempt to commit an offence and assault. “The case is being investigated with due sensitivity and priority,” DCP Chauhan stated.
The news of the alleged attack triggered late-night protests on Monday, with dozens of students gathering in a show of solidarity and demanding accountability. Visuals from the campus showed packed hallways, with students sitting shoulder-to-shoulder on the floor as university officials addressed their concerns.
In response to the escalating situation, the university administration issued a statement assuring its full cooperation with the authorities. “The police are conducting a thorough investigation into the matter and the administration is extending full cooperation to the investigating authorities,” the statement read.
