A family of 13 tourists from Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, has accused staff and bouncers at a popular North Goa restaurant of a violent assault, which included the alleged outrage of a woman’s modesty, following a misunderstanding on Saturday night.
Goa police have since registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the manager and security personnel of Romeo Lane Restaurant in Vagator, as reported by TOI.
The incident, as detailed in a complaint by a 24-year-old woman from the family, began innocuously. The family was seated at a table adjacent to one with leftover food and drinks from previous patrons who had already departed. When a late-arriving family member mistakenly picked up the leftover drink assuming that the family was sitting at both the tables, the situation escalated rapidly.
According to the complainant, the restaurant manager began shouting at them and threatened to throw them out, despite the family’s immediate apologies and offer to pay for the beverage. After settling their bill, a second minor incident occurred when a family member accidentally nudged a chair. The manager, who the family alleged appeared intoxicated, responded with offensive language.
“We apologised to him as we wanted to leave the restaurant. However, the manager and the waiter started assaulting one of the family members and thereafter, many bouncers of the said restaurant came, and they also started assaulting him with fist blows and slaps,” the woman stated in her complaint to the police.
The situation turned more violent as the family attempted to exit. The complainant alleged that a bouncer assaulted her brother with an iron pole, striking him on the chest and back and breaking his glasses. When she intervened, the situation worsened. “I tried to help him, but the bouncer tried to pull my T-shirt and slapped me on my face. They also abused me in filthy language,” her complaint reads.
Confirming the legal action, North Goa Superintendent of Police Rahul Gupta was cited by TOI as saying, “An FIR has been registered against Ajay Kavtikar, manager of Romeo Lane Restaurant, Junaid Ali and bouncers in connection with assault and outrage of modesty.” Police reports indicated that some family members sustained minor injuries during the altercation.
