Umar Ansari, son of the late gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, has been arrested by Ghazipur Police from Lucknow on charges of document forgery linked to a high-profile seized property case. The arrest, which took place on Sunday, is the latest development in the ongoing legal entanglements surrounding the Ansari family, as reported by HT.
Authorities stated that Umar Ansari allegedly created counterfeit documents in an attempt to reclaim properties seized under the Uttar Pradesh Gangsters Act.
In an official statement cited by PTI, the Superintendent of Police, Ghazipur, revealed that Umar submitted forged papers to the court, reportedly including the falsified signature of his mother, Afshan Ansari. Afshan, who is currently on the run, has a bounty of Rs 50,000 for her capture.
The illicit activity came to light during the legal process to recover his late father’s properties. Mukhtar Ansari, who died following a cardiac arrest in March 2024 at Banda Medical College Hospital, was serving a life term at the time of his death.
He had been convicted earlier in March on charges involving forged documents to obtain an arms licence dating back to 1990, and in April 2023, he received a decade-long sentence for the murder of BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai.
A case has now been registered against Umar Ansari at the Mohammadabad Police Station, with charges invoked under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), HT reported.
