A cab driver was left critically injured in Ghaziabad on Monday afternoon after a passenger allegedly stabbed him multiple times during a dispute over the fare. The incident took place near the Meerut trisection under the jurisdiction of the Nandgram police station.

The victim has been identified as 32-year-old Surendra Singh, a resident of Seelampur in Delhi. He suffered deep knife wounds to his chest, neck and back. Surendra was rushed to MMG Hospital, where doctors said he is in the intensive care unit and remains in a critical condition.

According to the police, Surendra had picked up the accused passenger offline from Shastri Nagar Park in Delhi around 3 pm. Officers said the same passenger had already travelled with Surendra earlier in the day, first from Delhi to Panipat and later back towards Ghaziabad. He had allegedly booked the cab for a drop near the Ghaziabad RRTS station or a nearby metro station.

Police officials said the argument over the fare began as the cab approached the trisection. "The passenger suddenly launched a frenzied knife attack, stabbing the driver on the neck and back. When the victim managed to open the window and get out of the car, the accused followed him and stabbed him again in the chest before fleeing," a police officer was quoted by TOI as saying.

In his rush to escape, the accused left a bag inside the cab. Police believe the bag could provide crucial leads, and teams are examining its contents as part of the investigation.

Arjun Singh, the victim’s brother-in-law, said Surendra somehow managed to call for help despite his heavy bleeding. “People gathered, but before anyone could stop him, the attacker jumped out and stabbed him again before running away,” he said. Arjun later filed a complaint at Nandgram police station.

ACP Nandgram Upasana Pandey said an FIR under BNS section 109 (attempt to murder) has been registered. Police have begun scanning CCTV footage from the surrounding areas to identify the accused. Two teams have been formed to trace and arrest him, the TOI report said.
