In a brazen daylight killing that has sent shockwaves through Bihar, notorious gangster Chandan Mishra was shot dead inside the ICU of Patna’s upscale Paras Hospital, with CCTV footage capturing the chilling precision of his assassins. At the centre of the footage is a man walking calmly, gun in hand, his face unmasked and unreadable. His name, police confirm, is Tauseef Badshah.

According to an NDTV report, Mishra, a gangster with 24 criminal cases, including a dozen murders, was on parole for medical treatment and admitted under police guard. Yet, on Thursday morning, five men entered the hospital unchallenged, walked straight to the ICU and opened fire. Mishra did not survive.

The CCTV footage, widely circulated on social media within hours, shows Tauseef Badshah leading the group, a pistol visible in his right hand. Unlike his accomplices, who fled after the shooting, Badshah walked out with the same unhurried stride, seemingly unfazed.

Two photos later surfaced, adding to the audacity of the crime. In one, Badshah is seen riding pillion on a motorcycle, pistol raised in the air. Another attacker appears to celebrate, hands lifted in triumph.

Police sources cited by NDTV said that Badshah hails from Patna’s Phulwari Sharif. His father runs a hardware business, his mother is a teacher and he attended the well-known Saint Karen’s School. Despite this seemingly ordinary background, Badshah had already been named in at least one case under the Arms Act.

Investigators claim he had recently ventured into contract killings, accepting payments to carry out murders or arrange logistics for such operations.

The killing, police say, stems from a bitter rivalry between Mishra and another gangster, Sheru. Once allies, the two reportedly fell out in Bhagalpur jail. Mishra later operated independently but continued using the "Sheru Gang" name, a move that may have sealed his fate.

The murder of a jailed criminal inside a high-security hospital has triggered fierce political backlash. Tejashwi Yadav, RJD leader and former Deputy Chief Minister, took to X, questioning: "Criminals, protected by the government, shot at a patient admitted to a Patna hospital. Is anyone safe in Bihar? Did such an incident happen in Bihar before 2005, during the RJD's rule?"

Independent MP Pappu Yadav alleged he received threats warning him to stay away from the case, declaring, "Law and order have completely collapsed... Criminals are being killed on the basis of their castes."

Bihar Police have detained six suspects from Patna and Buxar, with raids ongoing at hideouts linked to Sheru’s gang. The killing has reignited fierce political debate over Bihar's deteriorating law and order situation as the state prepares for elections.
