  • Sharma, TDP MP Mahesh Kumar, and BRS leader Rohith Reddy detained
  • Six of eleven arrested tested positive for cocaine and MDMA

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Moinabad farmhouse drug bust in Hyderabad’s outskirts has identified Namit Sharma, who opened fire at police during a raid on March 14, as a Delhi-based businessman. The SIT has revealed he is a close friend of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MP P Mahesh Kumar, one of the accused in the case, TOI reported.

The SIT has further stated that Sharma fired a .32 calibre revolver at the alleged instigation of former Tandur MLA Pilot Rohith Reddy and his brother, Ritesh Reddy.

The remand report submitted before a local court in Chevella has laid out in detail how the incident unfolded. When Moinabad sub-inspector Md Nayeemuddin reached the farmhouse and informed those present that he carried a search warrant, Rohith and Ritesh allegedly instructed Sharma to open fire, assuring him they would manage the consequences. Acting on those directions, Sharma discharged one round from his revolver, as per the report.

The police team narrowly escaped injury and promptly apprehended Sharma, seizing the weapon on the spot. The report further cited the SIT as saying that investigations are continuing to establish the precise nature of Sharma's relationship with the former legislator and the chain of events that led to the shooting.

The raid was conducted by personnel from EAGLE (Elite Action Group for Drug Law Enforcement) along with the Future City police, acting on a tip-off about a party involving narcotics at the farmhouse belonging to Rohith Reddy.

Eleven persons were arrested from the premises. Of these, six tested positive for drug use — four for cocaine, and one for amphetamine and methamphetamine, suspected to be MDMA. Drug screening tests conducted at the Institute of Mental Health in Erragadda revealed that Sharma tested positive for amphetamine, methamphetamine — indicating consumption of MDMA — as well as cocaine.

According to the remand report cited by TOI, Sharma resides in the Civil Lines area of New Delhi and is engaged in the construction business. He had arrived at the farmhouse that night in the company of MP Mahesh Kumar, described as a close associate of Rohith Reddy. The cocaine consumed that night was reportedly brought by another accused, Koushik Ravi, also a friend of Rohith, who had purchased it from an unknown individual in Shimla while visiting the hill town for a business meeting.

Sharma, Rohith, Ritesh, Koushik, and Arjun Reddy are said to have consumed cocaine mixed with alcohol. Given that tests pointed to possible MDMA consumption by both Sharma and Mahesh Kumar, the SIT is now working to determine who procured the drug and whether any additional contraband may have been disposed of following the raid.

Police have reportedly sought 10 days' custody of Rohith, Ritesh and Sharma, all of whom are currently in judicial remand, with the court expected to issue its orders on Friday.

Among the other accused, Arjun Reddy is identified as a friend of Rohith involved in Hyderabad's pub business. Vijaya Krishna, a friend of Ritesh, had been engaged in interior design work at the farmhouse, while Priyanka is also said to be an associate of Ritesh. Ramesh operates a poultry farm spread across one acre within the farmhouse premises, and Sravan Kumar serves as Rohith's personal assistant.
