An eight-year-old girl is battling for her life in a Bhopal hospital after her mother allegedly shoved her onto the tracks in front of the oncoming Tamil Nadu Express at Narmadapuram railway station in Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday evening, in a horrifying incident captured on closed-circuit television cameras, TOI reported.

The child sustained severe injuries to her head, waist and shoulder and lost a significant amount of blood. She was initially rushed to the district hospital and placed on ventilator support, but as her condition deteriorated, she was referred to a hospital in Bhopal, where doctors described her state as critical, as per the report.

The girl, a Class II student, had arrived at the station with her mother, a government employee who resided in the Malakhedi area of Narmadapuram. The two had been living alone since the death of the woman's husband, after which she had secured a compensatory government appointment.

Narmadapuram Government Railway Police in-charge Sanjeev Chaukse was cited by TOI as saying that the mother and daughter had been present on the platform for nearly three hours before the incident took place. When the Tamil Nadu Express pulled in towards Platform No. 1 at around 7:40 pm, the woman abruptly pushed the child onto the tracks. The girl was struck by the locomotive and became trapped between the platform edge and the tracks, the report quoted Chaukse as saying.

The officer described the child's ordeal as harrowing, noting she had suffered multiple injuries and must have endured immense pain. He added that the woman had been undergoing medical treatment for several years.

After the train passed over her, bystanders and railway personnel rushed to the child's aid, pulling her out from between the tracks and the platform and rushing her to hospital. Witnesses described a chaotic and distressing scene, with the injured girl lying in agony as people scrambled to help. Several bystanders, as per the report, claimed that when they moved to intervene, the woman repeatedly asked them not to rescue the child.

Police have registered a case in connection with the incident. Preliminary investigations suggest a mental health angle may be involved and officials said they were in the process of verifying the woman's treatment history. The family has been informed and further investigation is under way.
