A fresh spell of rain and thunderstorms is sweeping across major Indian cities, leadin to temporary respite from the heatwave. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued weather forecasts for cities including Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Hyderabad, all of which are experiencing varying degrees of rainfall, cloudy skies, and thunderstorms through the first week of May.
Heavy rain likely in Delhi
New Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) are set to witness continued rain till May 6. The IMD has forecast cloudy skies with chances of lightning and strong surface winds, following an intense spell of rain on Friday, when the city recorded its second-highest single-day rainfall for May since 1901.
The minimum temperature is expected to hover around 21 degrees Celsius, while the maximum may reach up to 35 degrees Celsius till Tuesday.
On the other hand, Delhi’s air quality deteriorated on Sunday, slipping into the ‘poor’ category. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 212 at 9 am.
Rain showers and thunderstorms in Bengaluru
Bengaluru is also expected to see continued rain showers and the possibility of thundershowers until May 6, IMD said. Light rainfall was observed in parts of the city over the weekend, and similar weather is likely to persist into the start of the new week. Daytime temperatures will likely range between 21°C and 34°C, offering relatively comfortable conditions for residents.
On Monday, May 5, the skies will remain partly cloudy with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers expected. Rain chances increase by Tuesday, especially in the evening or night. However, the city’s weather is expected to stabilise between May 7 to 9, with no major warnings in effect and only mild cloud cover anticipated.
Thunderstorms and high humidity in Mumbai
Mumbai is bracing for rain and thunderstorms, with the IMD issuing an alert for Monday. Overcast skies are expected to remain throughout the week. At 9 am on Monday, the temperature was 29 degrees Celsius, with humidity levels at 75 per cent and winds blowing at 5 km/h. Despite the rainfall, the city is experiencing sticky and warm conditions.
Sudden storms surprise Hyderabad residents
Hyderabad witnessed heavy rain, lightning, and strong winds on Sunday evening, surprising residents across several localities. Areas like Gachibowli, Miyapur, Tellapur, and BHEL experienced short but heavy rainfall, lasting up to 15 minutes and accompanied by gusty winds strong enough to rattle windows and drop local temperatures. According to the IMD-Hyderabad, such weather conditions will continue Monday as well.
