Motorists in the national capital have a final opportunity to settle outstanding traffic fines at a significant discount this weekend, as authorities organise a special Lok Adalat to clear a backlog of pending challans.

The Delhi Traffic Police, in conjunction with the Delhi State Legal Services Authority (DSLSA), will hold the National Lok Adalat across seven court complexes on Saturday, September 13. As per a Delhi Traffic Police statement, the event will run from 10 am to 4 pm, offering a swift resolution for compoundable traffic violations and bypassing the need for protracted court proceedings.

As per The Indian Express, the designated venues are the court complexes at Patiala House, Karkardooma, Rouse Avenue, Tis Hazari, Dwarka, Saket and Rohini. The initiative provides a public redressal system where vehicle owners can settle their dues, often at a reduced rate, without the typical formalities of a court case.

To participate, individuals must first download their pending challans or notices from the official Delhi Traffic Police website. The download portal became operational from 10 am on Monday, with a daily cap of 60,000 downloads. The system is configured to allow a maximum of 1,80,000 challans to be retrieved in the lead-up to the event.

Attendees are required to bring specific documents to the Lok Adalat: a printed copy of the challan or notice, the vehicle's registration certificate (RC) and a valid identity proof of the vehicle owner. The authorities have also set limits on the number of violations that can be settled per vehicle. For private vehicles, the cap is set at seven items, comprising five notices and two challans. Owners of commercial vehicles can settle a maximum of two notices or challans per vehicle.

This event follows a similar Lok Adalat held on May 10. A previous session on March 8 proved highly effective, with a staggering 1,53,437 challans settled, amounting to Rs 405.02 crore in resolved penalties. Data from the Delhi Traffic Police, cited by The Indian Express, indicated that the settlements for traffic challans alone in that event totalled Rs 1.7 crore.
