Delhi government's Public Works Department (PWD) has started preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to extend the proposed Munak Canal elevated road up to Kashmere Gate via a 4-kilometer tunnel between Inderlok and the ISBT
According to a report by Times of India, the project aims to create a seamless, signal-free corridor from the Delhi-Haryana border to central Delhi, easing congestion at Mukarba Chowk and Azadpur. PWD minister Parvesh Verma said the new tunnel would cut travel time by up to 40%.
An official was quoted by the newspaper as saying that the corridor will connect directly with ISBT, Outer Ring Road and Wazirabad corridor, and reduce travel time for vehicles coming from Sonipat, Rohtak and Urban Extension Road while easing bottlenecks at Mukarba Chowk, Azadpur and Roshanara Road.
In Sept, Delhi took over the upkeep of the 20km stretch from Bawana to Inderlok from Haryana to better manage the canal, one of the city's vital water lifelines. Recently, government proposed the project, which will start from Bawana-Narela road.
The PWD has carried out site inspections, and the minister described the project as a significant move toward achieving long-term, sustainable urban mobility.
"Delhi needs futuristic and innovative solutions that cater to the growing infrastructural needs of its citizens," Verma was quoted as saying.
"The corridor will be a major relief for commuters from north and northwest Delhi as well as those travelling from Haryana," he added.
Giving further details, an official said the authorities have begun a feasibility study, and planners will assess structural aspects, lane configurations, and intersection designs while formulating three conceptual development plans.
