A key 21-km stretch of the Bengaluru Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR) is set to open by March 2025. The STRR will provide seamless access to the Bangalore-Chennai Expressway (BCE), connecting Hoskote to the Tamil Nadu border.
This 21-kilometer section, which is presently under construction, would relieve traffic and serve as an essential connection to the future Bangalore-Chennai Expessway (NE 7).
The 288-kilometer STRR will encircle Bengaluru once it is finished, which is tentatively scheduled for 2027. This will greatly reduce traffic in the city and provide a much-needed bypass for commercial vehicles.
Eleven underpasses for increased safety, an 11-meter-wide median akin to Bengaluru's NICE Road, and six-lane traffic flow are some of the section's primary infrastructure characteristics. The road will also pass through the Bannerghatta National Park (BNP) Eco-Sensitive Zone with measures to reduce environmental impact.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has also started the bidding process for the remaining five STRR sections, spanning 144.25 kilometres at an estimated cost of Rs 4,749 crore.
Once fully operational, the STRR will help in diverting long-distance traffic away from Bengaluru’s city center. It will also reduce travel time between major cities like Chennai and Mangalore, along with improving logistics efficiency for commercial vehicles. The road will pass through the Bannerghatta National Park (BNP) Eco-Sensitive Zone to minimise environmental impact.
According to media reports, a few kilometres of STRR and BCE share the same carriageway from Hoskote, after which the STRR will be rerouted from BCE towards Hosur. The speed restriction specified by NHAI is 120 kmph for vehicles and 100 kmph for buses.
