Tamil Nadu is set to experience another spell of continuous rainfall this week, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting wet weather across several districts. Chennai, which has already seen cloudy skies and scattered showers, is likely to witness more unsettled weather by the weekend.

According to the IMD’s forecast light to moderate rain is expected on Tuesday at many places in Tamil Nadu as well as the Puducherry and Karaikal regions. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning may also occur in parts of the state.

The weather department said isolated rainfall is likely in districts including Ariyalur, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Kancheepuram, Kanniyakumari, Karur, Madurai, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Perambalur, Pudukkottai, Ranipet, Thanjavur, Thiruvallur, Thiruvarur, Tirunelveli, Tiruvannamalai, and Viluppuram. The surrounding Puducherry and Karaikal areas are also likely to receive showers.

Chennai is expected to see light rain through the day. A yellow alert has been issued for several districts due to the possibility of slippery roads, waterlogging and traffic slowdowns.

The IMD also said that heavy rain may occur at isolated places in Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi and Theni districts.

Rain likely through the weekend

The wet spell is unlikely to ease soon. The IMD said heavy rain may occur at isolated places in Mayiladuthurai and Cuddalore districts on Wednesday and Thursday. By Friday, cloud cover is expected to intensify, bringing a higher chance of heavy rain in Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, Villuppuram, Chengalpattu and Nagapattinam districts, along with Puducherry and Karaikal.

The weekend is also expected to remain rainy. On Saturday and Sunday, districts including Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Chennai, Villuppuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Ariyalur, Thiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Kanyakumari and Tirunelveli are likely to receive heavy rainfall. Puducherry and Karaikal are also expected to be impacted.

Heavy rain lashes Puducherry, schools, colleges shut

Normal life was affected in Puducherry and Karaikal regions on Tuesday due to incessant rains since last night.

State Home Minister A Namassivayam declared holiday for schools and colleges, including aided institutions in Puducherry and Karaikal regions on Tuesday. Low lying areas were inundated in Puducherry, officials said.
