A 31-year-old property dealer was shot dead in a calculated daylight ambush in Chandigarh's upscale Sector 9 market on Wednesday, in what police are treating as a pre-planned gang-linked killing, HT reported.

The victim, identified as Charanpreet Singh, a resident of Kubaheri Khurd village in Mullanpur, was leaving the Bodyzone gym in the Sector 9 market area around 12.30 pm when two helmeted assailants opened fire on his SUV. The duo, who had allegedly been lying in wait, fired approximately a dozen shots from both sides of the vehicle as it slowed at a turn while exiting the paid parking lot, according to preliminary findings cited in the report.
Singh sustained gunshot wounds to the abdomen, chest and arm. Several bullet marks were also visible on the vehicle's windshield, police reportedly said. Bystanders rushed him to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), where he was declared brought dead owing to excessive blood loss. His body was moved to the mortuary, pending a post-mortem examination.
The audacity of the attack has stunned investigators. It occurred mere metres from the Chandigarh Police headquarters, the UT Secretariat and the Chandigarh Housing Board office — some of the most sensitive administrative establishments in the Union Territory. Despite the busy, high-profile surroundings, the shooters managed to slip away into traffic, reportedly fleeing on the wrong side of the road.
Since the assailants wore helmets throughout the attack, ascertaining their identities remains a significant challenge, as per the HT report. Police are poring over CCTV footage from the area in an effort to trace them, even as the locality has been placed on high alert.
Hours after the shooting, an unverified social media post attributed to gangster Lucky Patial — said to head the Davinder Bambiha gang — surfaced, claiming responsibility for the killing. The post accused Singh of having passed information about the gang to rival groups, the report added.
The incident marks the second Bambiha gang-linked shooting to be reported in Chandigarh within the space of 24 hours. On Tuesday, unidentified assailants opened fire at a student leader near the Department of Botany on the Panjab University campus, in what is believed to have been a targeted attack backed by the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. The student leader escaped unhurt.
