A woman was found dead inside a public toilet at Chandigarh’s Rose Garden on Saturday, November 29. Panic broke out around 3:15 pm on when visitors heard a scream from the washroom and alerted the traffic personnel posted at the gate, Hindustan Times reported.

When police reached the spot, they asked a woman present at the spot to look inside the restroom. She found the victim — identified as 30-year-old Diksha Thakur — lying unconscious in a pool of blood, bearing a deep, sharp-edged wound on her neck.

The woman was still barely breathing when she was found, but died moments later, police were quoted by the newspaper as saying. She was rushed to the nearby government hospital just metres away, where doctors declared her brought dead.

The deceased was identified as Diksha Thakur, 30, based on documents found on her, including a Bihar Staff Selection Commission application form.

According to Chandigarh Police, Diksha hailed from Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh. Preliminary inquiry revealed that she had been separated from her husband for nearly a year; the couple has a three-year-old son.

For the past four months, she had been living as a paying guest in Phase 11, Mohali. She was employed as a customer care executive with Chaupal TV, a private media and OTT company located in Chandigarh’s Industrial Area, Phase 2.

As per the report, investigations found that Diksha had been on medical leave for over a week due to anxiety and other health-related issues. Earlier in the week, she had visited a hospital in Panchkula with her brother-in-law and was prescribed anti-anxiety medication. On Saturday, after returning from leave, she, as per the report, left office around 2 pm, saying she felt unwell. From there, she went to Rose Garden.

Police are now reviewing CCTV footage and examining her call records. The staff assigned to the public toilet was absent on Saturday, leaving no eyewitnesses to the incident.

A four-inch kitchen knife was recovered from the spot by the forensic team. Investigators said it is still unclear whether the case is a murder or suicide. Police also found anti-depressant medication in her bag.

“At this stage, we have not found evidence of foul play. However, we are examining every possible angle, including personal, circumstantial and psychological factors. The post-mortem report and forensic analysis will be crucial in determining the exact cause of death,” SSP Kanwardeep Kaur was quoted by the newspaper as saying.

The toilet area has been sealed, and security has been tightened at Rose Garden, a location frequented largely by senior citizens, women and children.
