The Delhi government on Tuesday announced that the Centre has approved Rs 803.4 crore for the upgradation of arterial roads and flyovers spanning over 330 km across the capital.
The funds, approved under the Central Road and Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) scheme by the Union ministry of road transport and highways, will support a total of 152 key stretches across Delhi.
Among the prominent stretches identified for upgradation are sections of the Ring Road, AIIMS-Ashram corridor, Mathura Road, ISBT Kashmiri Gate-Wazirabad, Vivek Vihar-GT Road, Dwarka Approach Road, Rani Jhansi Road, and Delhi University’s Chhatra Marg. Strengthening of flyovers at Rani Jhansi and Wazirabad has also been approved.
Citywide road revamp
Public Works Department (PWD) minister Parvesh Sahib Singh called the development a “turning point” for Delhi’s urban infrastructure. “Roads are the arteries of any modern city. This initiative is not just about repairing roads – it is about creating world-class urban infrastructure... The project will cover strengthening, resurfacing, widening, construction of new corridors, and development of flyovers, upgrading key routes across Central, North, East, North East, Shahdara, and North West districts,” he was quoted by PTI as saying.
The PWD has listed projects covering Central, North, East, North East, Shahdara, and North West districts. In Central Delhi, projects include the upgrade of the ITO Loop and Ferozeshah Road. Flyover strengthening works have been approved for Rohtak Road (Military Road-Jhansi Road). In South and South-East Delhi, new roads from Aali Vihar to Sarita Vihar, upgrades on Press Enclave Road, and improvements along the Nizamuddin-Kalkaji stretch have been included.
Shahdara and East Delhi will see the strengthening of the Vivek Vihar-GT Road connector, rehabilitation of Vikas Marg (ITO to D-93), and widening of the Noida Link Road.
The projects in North East Delhi include improvement of Loni Chakkar to Delhi border arterial road and construction of flyovers on Road No. 63 and Gokulpuri stretch. The projects from West and South West Delhi include strengthening of Outer Ring Road (Vikas Puri–Najafgarh) with flyover and construction of elevated flyover on Rajouri Garden-Tagore Garden stretch, it added.
Officials have stressed that measures will be taken to reduce inconvenience for commuters during construction. Dedicated traffic management plans will be prepared to minimize disruption across busy stretches.
“The CRIF program aligns with the broader vision of transforming Delhi into a city ready for rapid urban growth and increasing mobility demands,” an official said.
