‘Brrr, Bangalore is freezing’: Unseasonal cold snap grips city, sparks social media frenzy

The combination of fog, light rainfall reported on Thursday morning and cooler temperatures has defined the city’s recent weather pattern.

A crisp, uncharacteristic chill has gripped Bengaluru, sending the city’s minimum temperatures plummeting and sparking a wave of reactions from residents unaccustomed to such an early winter bite. The cold spell, arriving well before the typical December onset, has become the talk of the town, dominating social media conversations and even causing minor travel disruptions.

The sudden dip in mercury has not gone unnoticed online, where residents have taken to platform X to share their amusement and discomfort. Comedian and entrepreneur Tanmay Bhat set the tone, posting simply, “Also brrrr Bangalore is freezing.”

His sentiment was echoed across the platform. One individual quipped, “Bhai, if Bangalore is freezing, Kasol is absolute zero,” while another declared, “Bengaluru is legit giving North Indian winter vibes.” The posts consistently highlighted the unusual nature of the cold, with users expressing surprise at the conditions.

The weather’s impact extended beyond social media on Monday, affecting air travel. Dense morning fog at Kempegowda International Airport led to significant delays. A spokesperson for the airport confirmed to ANI that approximately 41 flights were delayed since 5.30 am due to the reduced visibility.

While the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has not issued any severe weather warnings, the combination of fog, light rainfall reported on Thursday morning and cooler temperatures has defined the city’s recent weather pattern.

Data from the IMD substantiates the public’s perception of a colder climate. On Wednesday night, the city recorded a minimum temperature of 16.7 degrees Celsius. This reading, highlighted in a Deccan Herald report, is about 1.6 degrees Celsius below Bengaluru's average minimum temperature for November.

According to the meteorological department, winter is officially expected to set in by the first week of December. The forecast for the coming days, as reported by Times Now, anticipates partly cloudy skies with daytime temperatures hovering between 28–29 degrees Celsius and minimums staying in the 18–20 degrees Celsius range. The IMD has predicted generally cloudy skies with a chance of light rain in some parts of the city.

Alongside the cooler weather, Bengaluru has also seen a gradual decline in air quality. Data from the Central Pollution Control Board's (CPCB) Sameer app shows the Air Quality Index (AQI) today stands at 115, placing it in the "moderate" category.

This represents an increase over the past three days, where the AQI was recorded at 87 on November 25 and 96 on November 26, before reaching 103 on November 27. The CPCB app notes that the current AQI level could cause “breathing discomfort to people with lung disorders, asthma and heart diseases.”
