Bengaluru weather: Monsoon revives with short, sharp showers and waterlogging; IMD forecasts more thunderstorms

The brisk spell, although brief, led to waterlogging on major roads such as Kamaraj Road, as well as in low-lying areas of KR Puram and along the Kasturi Nagar down-ramp in Bengaluru.

After a spell of subdued weather, Bengaluru experienced a vigorous resurgence of the southwest monsoon as several neighbourhoods, particularly in the East Zone and Yelahanka, were hit by heavy rainfall late on Monday evening.

Data from the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Management Centre (KSNDMC), reported by Deccan Herald, confirmed that the heaviest showers were concentrated in these localities, while the South and West zones remained largely untouched by the downpour.

The brisk spell, although brief, led to waterlogging on major roads such as Kamaraj Road, as well as in low-lying areas of KR Puram and along the Kasturi Nagar down-ramp. However, as Deccan Herald cited from senior traffic police officials, these incidents of water accumulation did not escalate into significant traffic woes. North Bengaluru, too, was spared from any major disruptions, even though mild flooding was observed on some stretches.

Throughout Monday, residents endured a typically overcast monsoon ambiance, with steady winds and persistent cloud cover lingering over the city. Despite the cloudbursts experienced in select areas, the actual rainfall measured by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) remained modest.

According to the IMD’s Bengaluru city observatory, 1.9 mm of rainfall was recorded between 8.30 am and 8.30 pm. Both the HAL airport observatory and the Bengaluru Urban automatic weather station logged 2 mm during the same period.

Looking ahead, the IMD has forecast thunderstorms paired with gusty winds over the next four days. Deccan Herald reported that while widespread disruption has so far been avoided, residents should remain cautious, especially during peak monsoon hours in the late evening, when brief but intense showers could result in slippery roads and further incidents of localised waterlogging.
