Bengaluru stampede

The euphoria of Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s long-awaited IPL triumph turned to horror on Monday as chaotic celebrations outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium left 11 dead and many injured in a devastating stampede. Behind the numbers lie heartbreaking stories of young lives cut short - a teenager who just wanted to post celebration photos, a software engineer on a day off with friends and parents who spotted their injured son on live TV, helpless in the chaos, reports The New Indian Express (TNIE).

"He Just Wanted To Celebrate": A Mother’s Anguish

Nineteen-year-old Bhumik, a first-year engineering student, had begged his mother to let him join the victory parade. "I kept telling him not to go," she sobbed, clutching his photo. But Bhumik was adamant about joining the celebrations to capture photos and share them on social media, as quoted by TNIE.

His friends described a desperate scramble to save him after he collapsed in the crowd. "No ambulances, no police help - we carried him to a jeep, but it was too late," one said.

A Day Off Turned Deadly

Sahana, 24, a software developer at Bosch, had taken leave to celebrate with friends. Her parents in Kolar waited hours for news, only to learn she had been declared dead on arrival at Vyedhi Hospital. Sahana got caught in the stampede and was knocked down in the chaos after being pushed by the crowd.

Her friends, who had been trying desperately to reach her amid the commotion, were later informed that she had been taken to the hospital. When they finally arrived, they were devastated to learn that Sahana had been declared brought dead, TNIE reported.

"We Saw Him On TV - Lying On The Road"

For a group of friends from Mangaluru, the nightmare unfolded on live television. Their missing friend - a fellow software engineer—was spotted by his parents on a news broadcast, trampled in the stampede. “There was no communication, no medical help or ambulances. We didn’t even know if he was alive,” one of the friends was quoted as saying by TNIE.

Eyewitnesses blamed last-minute entry rules, poor crowd control and a lack of medical aid. As families demand answers, one question lingers: Why was a victory parade rushed through without basic safety measures?
