A 20-year-old painter from Uttar Pradesh has been arrested for allegedly murdering his 22-year-old pregnant wife, whose decomposed body was discovered in their home in Bengaluru after neighbours reported a foul smell, police revealed on Thursday.

The accused, identified as Shivam from Kushinagar in Uttar Pradesh, had been on the run since Tuesday but was apprehended the following day. According to a TOI report, the victim, Sumana, was three months pregnant. The couple had married against their families’ wishes six months ago after a five-year relationship and had been living in Bengaluru for the past five months.

Police sources cited by TOI said that Shivam frequently accused Sumana of infidelity, leading to violent altercations. On Monday night, he allegedly assaulted her following an argument before the pair slept in separate rooms. The next morning, Shivam claimed he tried to wake her but left for work when she did not respond.?

Disturbingly, officers said he returned that evening, ate dinner, drank alcohol and went to sleep without checking on her. By Wednesday morning, he allegedly found her dead and fled. Neighbours later alerted authorities about the stench emanating from the house.?

“There was bleeding from her nose, but no other injuries were visible,” a police official said. The house contained liquor tetra packs and leftover food, TOI reported. Shivam was arrested on Thursday after a two-day search.
