A young schoolgirl in Bengaluru was crushed to death by a BMTC bus near Kogilu Cross, Yelahanka on Thursday, a day before her 11th birthday, The Times of India reported.

Tanvi Krishna, who would have turned 11 on August 22, was travelling with her mother and younger sister when a BMTC bus fatally ran her.

The accident occurred around 8.20 am, when Tanvi’s mother, Harshitha (33), was taking her daughters to school on her scooter. Her younger child, five-year-old Kruthi, sat in the middle, while Tanvi was seated at the back. According to Yelahanka traffic police, drainage cleaning work by the BWSSB had left mud and debris piled up on the roadside, adding to the congestion on Kogilu Main Road.

As Harshitha rode alongside a BMTC bus, the two-wheeler was struck from the side. The impact caused the mother and her daughters to fall on the right side of the road. Tanvi rolled down and came under the bus’s left rear wheel. She suffered a severe head injury and died instantly, while Harshitha and little Kruthi escaped with minor injuries.

Dashcam footage from a nearby car, as well as CCTV from the BMTC bus, captured moments before and after the incident. However, since the bus and the scooter were moving parallel, there is no clear footage of the precise moment of impact, leaving investigators to piece together how the tragedy unfolded.

Tanvi’s body was handed over to her family from Gauribidanur in Chikkaballapura district after a post-mortem. Based on Harshitha’s complaint, the police registered a case against the bus driver, who has been served notice.

However, a BMTC statement on the accident seemed to absolve its driver of any wrongdoing. In the statement, it said that on reviewing the CCTV footage from the bus, it was observed that at 8.18 am, the rider of the two-wheeler, carrying two children, entered the main road. Due to road construction and a stationary two-wheeler ahead, the scooterist applied brakes suddenly, lost control, and fell, with the child falling under the rear left wheel of the bus.
