A 28-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by a group of youths on the Ramnagar bypass road in Silchar on the night of February 19 when she was travelling in a car with her fiancé.
According to the survivor’s statement given to the police, she and her fiancé were driving along the Silchar bypass late at night. When they reached the Chengkoorie Road area, her fiancé briefly stepped out of the vehicle. It was during this time that a group of young men allegedly approached them in another vehicle and blocked their path.
In her First Information Report (FIR), the woman stated that at least seven men were involved in the attack. She alleged that the accused dragged her fiancé a short distance away from the car and held him back so that he could not help her. She further claimed that the men then sexually assaulted her one after another.
The woman also alleged that after the assault, the accused forced her to transfer Rs 10,000 to one of their bank accounts. Police said that this claim of extortion is also being investigated along with the main charges.
Family members of the survivor said the couple had stopped on the bypass road, a few kilometres away from the main town area, when a group of men arrived in a Mahindra Thar and attacked them. They said the men acted together, blocking the couple’s car before carrying out the alleged crime.
Based on her complaint, Silchar Sadar police registered a case under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including provisions related to gangrape, criminal conspiracy, criminal intimidation, assault on a woman and dacoity.
Cachar SP Partha Pratim Das said one accused has been taken into custody and efforts are on to arrest the remaining culprits. “The survivor’s medical examination has been conducted and the report is awaited. Investigation is progressing on multiple fronts,” he was quoted by TOI as saying.
