  • Man arrested for falsely claiming UPSC rank 440 in Bihar.
  • Village celebrated his fake achievement before truth emerged.
  • Police and RJD MLA seek to recover cash and gifts given to him.

A man from Bihar’s Sheikhpura district who falsely claimed to have secured the 440th rank in the UPSC Civil Services Examination has been arrested, police said on Monday. The accused, identified as Ranjeet Kumar, had gone missing after his claim was exposed as fake, News18 Hindi reported.

Kumar had earlier told villagers and local leaders that he had cleared the civil services examination with an All-India Rank of 440 after the final results were announced on March 6.

His claim led to widespread celebrations in the village, where he was honoured with garlands, bouquets, and shawls by locals, community leaders, and even police officials.

A video of Kumar delivering a motivational speech at one such felicitation event also went viral on social media.

In the speech, he spoke about hard work, dedication, and self-belief, quoting former President A P J Abdul Kalam as an inspiration. He also claimed that he studied only four hours a day while other aspirants studied for much longer and encouraged students to stay focused on their goals.

Several local figures, including former RJD MLA Vijay Samrat, met and felicitated him. He was even invited to the Mahuli police station, where officials honoured him for his supposed achievement, The Times of India reported.

However, doubts arose when locals checked the official merit list. In the list, Ranjith Kumar R of Karnataka secured the 440th rank. Ranjeet allegedly presented this result as his own and informed people that he had cleared the UPSC examination and become an IAS officer, according to the TOI report.

Meanwhile, there have been other cases of false claims related to the UPSC examination as well. Akanksha Singh, the granddaughter of Bihar’s Brahmeshwar Mukhiya, had claimed to be a topper. However, it was later revealed that the actual selected candidate was another Akanksha Singh from Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh, who had secured the 301st rank, News18 Hindi reported.

The situation had become so confusing at the time that the UPSC itself had to issue an official press release to clarify which candidate had actually been selected.
