A 60-year-old resident of Gharuan in Mohali’s Kharar was found dead on Wednesday morning, hanging from an electricity pole near his home. According to the police officials, a note was found scribbled on the man’s leg that read, “my son is responsible for this,” Hindustan Times reported.

The deceased, a father of four, had allegedly faced continuous physical and emotional abuse from his younger son, who is described by family members as an alcoholic.

The man’s elder son lodged a complaint with the police, stating that his younger brother frequently consumed alcohol and regularly harassed their parents. On the night of July 29, the accused allegedly returned home in an inebriated state and once again assaulted their parents. The elderly man left the house soon after and did not return. The family began searching for him overnight and found his body the next morning, according to the HT report.

Police have registered a case under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertains to abetment of suicide. The body has been sent for a postmortem examination, and investigations are ongoing. No arrests had been made as of Thursday evening.

In a separate incident, a 20-year-old woman was found hanging in her home in Sector 82, Mohali, on Wednesday night. Her husband, who works as a caretaker, told police that the two had argued earlier that evening when she wanted to accompany him to the market. He suggested she stay back to avoid the long walk. Upon returning around 9 pm, he found the room locked from inside. After breaking the door open, he found his wife hanging from an iron angle. She was declared brought dead at the civil hospital.

Police have initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC, and the body was handed over to her family after the postmortem, HT reported.
