Five people, including two children, two women and one man, died after a moving bus caught fire in Lucknow. Reports said that the incident took place in the Mohanlalganj area on the outskirts of Lucknow at 5 am on Thursday.
Several people were injured after the fire broke out. Most of the passengers were reportedly asleep when the incident happened. Sources said that the bus was carrying 80 passengers.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Mohanlalganj) Rajneesh Verma said that the bus was going from Bihar's Begusarai to Delhi when it suddenly caught fire. It is believed that the fire broke out due to a short circuit in the bus.
Police found that the emergency door of the bus was not operational, due to which, the passengers in the front part of the bus were not able to get out of the bus.
Eyewitnesses said that the flames from the bus were visible from almost a kilometre away and that the bus did not come to a halt immediately after the fire broke out.
Firefighters reached the spot promptly and managed to control the blaze within half an hour, PTI reported. A picture of the burnt bus surfaced on social media after the incident.
