Two men arrested for an armed robbery at a jewellery store in Ghatkopar, Mumbai, were college students, said police suspecting that the crime was carried out to fund a gaming addiction. A third accomplice, who is also a college student, is still at large.
According to a report by The Indian Express, the two college students, Tanish Bhaisade and Suraj Yadav, both aged 20, were apprehended by the police from a gaming zone and produced before a court on Thursday.
The duo was remanded in police custody for a week. A police source was quoted by the newspaper as saying that prima facie it appears that the accused were into gaming and even after the robbery, they went to a gaming zone.
The incident had taken place on Wednesday morning when three persons entered Darshan Jewellers in Ghatkopar armed with a chopper and a gun.
“While they are not confirming the motive, we suspect the trio, all BCom students, wanted money to fund their gaming habit,” an official said.
People familiar with the matter said Tanish and Suraj are claiming that it was the third accused who had provided the firearm to them. The police have also recovered the stolen ornaments from the accused.
After the robbery, as the trio were about to flee with jewellery, store owner Darshan Medhkar tried to stop them, when one of the accused attacked him on the neck with a chopper.
Medhkar was rushed to hospital and was later discharged.
