Budget 2025 shines bright for PM Surya Ghar scheme, allocation up 80%

In February, 2024, the government relaunched its rooftop solar scheme as 'PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana', vowing an investment of over Rs 75,000 crore.

The Budget 2025 has increased the allocation for the government's flagship rooftop solar scheme by 80 percent to Rs 20,000 crore from Rs 11,100 crore (revised estimate), a move aimed at meeting India’s renewable energy target.

Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Budget for 2025-26 in Parliament on February 1.

On January 22, Moneycontrol wrote that the Budget would see an increased allocation for the PM Surya Ghar scheme to ensure faster implementation to meet the targets set by the government.

The government aims to have 50 lakh solar installations under the PM Surya Ghar scheme by March 2026, documents reviewed by Moneycontrol showed. By the end of FY27, it intends to complete its target of one crore solar installations.

As of now, nearly eight lakh rooftop installations have been done, which means the programme will have to pick up pace in FY26 and will need additional budgetary support.

The PM Surya Ghar programme was approved by the cabinet on February 29, 2024, with an outlay of Rs 75,021 crore, spread out over three years.

According to the latest Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets, India has committed to reducing the emission intensity of its GDP by 45 percent by 2030 from the 2005 level and achieving about 50 percent cumulative electric power installed capacity from non-fossil fuel-based energy resources by 2030.
