Will home loan interest rates fall post RBI credit policy announcement on April 9?

As the world grapples with the fallout of Trump tariffs, all eyes are on India’s response to the new levies that will come into force tomorrow. Amid the raging tariff battle, RBI Monetary Policy Committee led by Governor Sanjay Malhotra will be announcing the crucial decision on benchmark interest rates tomorrow i.e. April 9, 2025. Apart from the repo rate, the RBI Governor will also talk about growth projection, state of inflation among other things. RBI’s first MPC of FY26 that commenced on April 7 is likely to announce rate cut of 25 bps. The Central Bank’s probable decision to cut benchmark interest rate is seen as an attempt to protect the Indian economy from the impact of the tariff troubles.

The final outcome of the 2-day MPC will be announced by Governor Malhotra tomorrow i.e. April 9, 2025.

Typically, MPC event where the RBI Governor announces the decision and deliberation regarding the benchmark interest rate is held at 10:00 am.

Where can we watch RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra's press conference?

What can we expect from RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra?

Current buzz suggests that Malhotra will slash the repo rate from existing 6.25 percent to 6 percent. Previously, the RBI MPC had cut the benchmark interest rate to 6.25 percent. This was the first time since May 2020 that the central bank had slashed the repo rate. While the status quo on stance will remain with MPC opting for accommodative approach, GDP outlook will also be a major thing to watch out for.
