Stocks of Britannia, Jubilant FoodWorks (Domino’s Pizza) and WestLife Development (franchisee of McDonald’s Restaurants) slipped 3-12 percent intraday Tuesday on health concern issues as Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) claimed bread contains cancer-causing chemicals.
According to a CSE report, nearly 84 percent of 38 commonly available brands of pre-packaged breads including pav and buns, tested positive for potassium bromate and potassium iodate, banned in many countries as they are listed as "hazardous" for public health.
CSEs Pollution Monitoring Laboratory (PML) tested 38 commonly available branded varieties of pre-packaged breads, pav and buns, ready-to-eat burger bread and ready-to-eat pizza breads of popular fast food outlets from Delhi.
However, bread making companies have denied using potassium bromate or potassium iodate. In an interview to CNBC-TV18, Jubilant Foodworks has said that the company uses ingredients that are approved by FSSAI and flour used is not treated with potassium bromate or potassium iodate.
Britannia has also denied using potassium bromate or iodate in bread. “All bread products are in compliance with food safety norms,” it says.
Terming the claims by CSE as ‘completely baseless’, WestLife says that McDonald’s India does not use potassium bromate or potassium iodate in the flour and all other ingredients that goes into our buns.
“At McDonald’s India, we serve our customers with the highest quality products across all our restaurants. We go through a lot of efforts to ensure our food is safe for our customers and have stringent quality processes at every stage. In India, as also globally, McDonald’s adheres to the highest food safety standards and pursues strict compliance with consumer safety laws and regulations,” it says in a press statement. At 10:32 hrs Britannia Industries was quoting at Rs 2,628.00, down Rs 52.95, or 1.98 percent, Jubilant Foodworks was quoting at Rs 1,013.60, down Rs 98.85, or 8.89 percent and Westlife Development was quoting at Rs 217.20, down Rs 2.70, or 1.23 percent on the BSE.
