Trump-Musk alliance draws scrutiny amid Tesla showcase at White House

Trump's public endorsement of Tesla amid political alliance with Elon Musk has sparked ethics concerns and intensified debates over corporate favouritism.

Trump's public endorsement of Tesla, along with news that federal agencies such as the Federal Aviation Administration have sought contracts benefiting Musk's businesses, has raised the level of scrutiny.

US President Donald Trump has recently displayed Tesla cars at the White House, a sign of an emerging relationship with Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and Trump's largest donor in the 2024 election cycle, reports The Washington Post.

The event, which was also a press conference and product showcase, saw Trump declare his choice of a cherry red Tesla Model S for personal use, generating a wave of conservative support for the struggling electric vehicle (EV) maker.

Tesla wins conservative support amidst protests

Tesla, which was dealing with a plummeting stock price, frustrated investors, and demonstrations in the US, experienced a moderate bounce in its stock after the event. Conservative lawmakers and pundits came to the defence of Musk. US Attorney General Pam Bondi threatened to label anti-Tesla protesters as domestic terrorists, and high-profile Republicans like Sen. Ted Cruz and Fox News personality Sean Hannity openly supported the brand.

The initiative has generated heightened interest in Tesla buying, particularly in historically conservative states. But the action jeopardises alienating Tesla's early expansion of liberal customer base.

Alliance raises conflict of interest issues

Musk and Trump's friendship has become even more entwined, particularly after Musk put almost $290 million into the re-election efforts of Trump. Nevertheless, their bond has elicited ethical questions. Senate Democrats have requested a probe into Musk's possible conflict of interest concerns, citing worry about Musk's power in the administration, given his chairmanship of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

Trump's public endorsement of Tesla, along with news that federal agencies such as the Federal Aviation Administration have sought contracts benefiting Musk's businesses, has raised the level of scrutiny. Democrats are calling for transparency into White House communications with Tesla and any staff members with financial stakes in the company.

Business risks amid political entanglements

Despite Republican support, however, experts debate whether this political play can endure Tesla's future. Tesla stock has fallen just under 35% this year, and the alignment of Musk with the Trump administration has in some investors' minds hurt the brand's reputational issues. "The risk for Musk is that he ends up being a symbol of crony capitalism," said Paul Barrett, deputy director at NYU's Stern Center for Business and Human Rights.

In addition, the White House promotion of Tesla has stoked fears about increasing overlap between Musk's business endeavours and his role in the federal government. Critics contend that Musk's efforts on DOGE could distract away from Tesla and worsen its market woes.

Ethical questions and implications in the future

Rep. Gerry Connolly, the ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, has asked for a full report of White House staff participation in the Tesla event, as well as an explanation of whether any officials with financial interests in Tesla had roles in its planning. The White House has until March 26 to comply.

Connolly disparaged the event as putting the promotion of Musk's commercial interests ahead of the solution to desperate national economic issues. "President Trump's response to the rising economic crises is a car commercial he hoped would drive the stock price of Tesla higher," he wrote.

In spite of growing controversies, Musk's friends insist on his dedication to the DOGE project, which is to be completed by July 4, 2026. "Elon believes it's the most significant thing in the world to work on," said one friend. "Nothing will divert him unless he wants it to."

As Musk's political and business partnerships become more entrenched, criticism regarding possible conflicts of interest and long-term effects on Tesla and the overall economy will likely increase.
