As tariffs come into force on major economies, U.S. President Donald Trump mocked world leaders seeking to strike trade agreements, saying, "These countries are calling us up, kissing my ass."
Trump continued, "Please, please sir make a deal. I'll do anything. I'll do anything, sir," mimicking the tone of those seeking negotiations.
He was speaking at a fundraising gala for House Republicans on Tuesday night (April 8).

The U.S. president believes his policy will revive America's lost manufacturing base by forcing companies to relocate to the United States.
However, many business experts and economists question how quickly — if ever — this can occur, warning of higher inflation as the tariffs drive up prices.
Trump also targeted dissent within his own party, criticising rebel Republicans who argue that Congress should lead trade negotiations. "Let me tell you, you don't negotiate like I negotiate," he said.
His remarks came just before the implementation of steep new tariffs. From Wednesday, April 9, 2025, U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports surged to 104%, as confirmed by the White House.
Republican senators have expressed concerns over the economic fallout and are pressing the Trump administration for answers. Experts continue to question the policy’s effectiveness, warning it could spark lasting inflation rather than a manufacturing revival.
Tariffs have now been extended to dozens of trading partners, including the EU and Japan, dramatically escalating global trade tensions.
