US President Donald Trump, while signing an executive order to impose an additional 25 percent tariff on Indian goods due to New Delhi’s continued purchase of Russian crude oil, noted that Washington and Moscow had made “a lot of progress” toward resolving the Ukraine conflict.
He also remarked that he wasn’t certain whether the “productive talks” between the US and Russia were linked to the decision to increase tariffs on India.
“We put a 50 per cent tariff on India," he said on Wednesday (local time), “I don’t know if that had anything to do with it, but we’ve had very productive talks today" (with Russia), he added.
This development comes after US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff’s three-hour meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Wednesday, which a White House official confirmed and described as “positive.” Despite the optimistic tone of the talks, the Trump administration is expected to proceed with another round of secondary sanctions on Russia this Friday.
“There’s a very good chance" that they were reaching the end of the road to peace, he added.
Trump said that there was a “good prospect" for a tripartite meeting between him, Putin, and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky.
