A late-night party at a Brooklyn lounge turned into tragedy when gunfire erupted inside Taste of the City in Crown Heights around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, leaving at least three people dead and eight others injured, according to Fox News.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the incident began with a dispute that quickly escalated into a barrage of bullets. Responding officers arrived within minutes after multiple 911 calls reported the chaos.
Victims identified
Of the 11 victims, two men aged 27 and 35, and a third man whose age has not been confirmed, were pronounced dead at the scene, Tisch said. The eight other victims, aged between 27 and 61, were rushed to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, Fox News reported.
Police say multiple shooters involved
Authorities believe several gunmen opened fire inside the lounge, though no suspects were in custody as of Sunday morning, according to Fox News.
At least 36 shell casings were recovered from the scene. A firearm was also found nearby, and investigators are working to determine whether it was used in the attack.
NYPD: “An anomaly' in record-low shootings
Commissioner Tisch noted that New York City is witnessing historically low levels of gun violence this year.
“We have the lowest number of shooting incidents and shooting victims seven months into the year that we’ve seen on record in the city of New York,” Tisch told reporters, cited by Fox News. “Something like this is, of course, thank God, an anomaly… but we’re going to investigate and get to the bottom of what went down.”
Investigation underway
Police are canvassing CCTV footage from around the lounge to piece together the timeline of events and identify the shooters. Detectives remain at the crime scene, which was littered with evidence markers early Sunday morning.
