Twelve people were hospitalized with minor injuries after an American Airlines flight caught fire upon landing at Denver International Airport on Thursday.

Flight 1006, traveling from Colorado Springs to Dallas Fort Worth, had been diverted to Denver after the crew reported engine vibrations, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The Boeing 737-800 landed safely at around 5:15 p.m., but an engine ignited while the aircraft was taxiing to the gate.

Emergency slides were deployed, and passengers evacuated the plane swiftly. Images from the scene showed travelers standing on the aircraft's wing as smoke billowed around them. The airport confirmed that all 172 passengers and six crew members were safely moved to the terminal.

American said in a statement that the flight experienced an engine-related issue after taxiing to the gate. There was no immediate clarification on exactly when the plane caught fire.

The 172 passengers and six crew members were taken to the terminal, airline officials said.

"We thank our crew members, DEN team, and first responders for their quick and decisive action with the safety of everyone on board as the priority," American Airlines said in a statement.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, and the FAA has launched an investigation into the incident.
