His decision comes a week after former Indian captain Anil Kumble resigned as the coach following a prolonged tiff with captain Virat Kohli
The former Indian coach managed some impressive feats during his year-long tenure and a look at the performances of his predecessors over the past 17 years puts things in perspective.
In a social media post, Kumble said that despite attempts to resolve the misunderstandings between him and Virat Kohli, the partnership was "untenable".
In his year at the helm as the head coach, the Indian cricket team's performance was commendable.
A member of the team management confirmed that Kumble wasn’t travelling with the team. "Yes, chief coach Anil Kumble is staying back for the ICC meeting. The team is flying off to Barbados today," he said.
While Kumble is an automatic entry into the process, the others in the fray are Australian Tom Moody and Englishman Richard Pybus, who has coached Pakistan earlier. The two Indians among applicants are former fast bowler Dodda Ganesh and former India A coach Lalchand Rajput.
The current coach will have to undergo a "fair and completely transparent process" if he wants to retain the position.
All the doubts have been put to rest as Kohli was seen having a good knock at the practice wickets on Saturday morning before the start of the third day’s play.
