A report by the New York Post says interest in the iPhone 4 has suddenly shot up, even though the phone first came out back in 2010. At the time, it was cutting edge. Today, it is being loved for the exact opposite reasons.
On social media, people are proudly sharing photos taken on the iPhone 4 and comparing them with pictures shot on the latest phones. While new devices offer crystal-clear images, the older phone produces grainy, slightly washed-out photos that many users find more honest and emotional. Some are even calling it the new digital camera. One post summed it up neatly, saying the vibe is unmatched.
This growing nostalgia has had a real impact. Searches for buying an iPhone 4 have jumped by nearly 1,000 percent, according to Google Trends. On resale platforms like eBay, the phone is selling for eye-watering prices, especially if it is unused or still in its original box. For a device that is 16 years old, that is quite a comeback.
But there is another side to this trend, and it is not as charming. Experts warn that using such an old phone comes with serious risks. The iPhone 4 can only run iOS 7.1.2, which was released more than a decade ago. That means no security updates and no protection against modern threats.
Lee Elliott from tech recycling platform Compare and Recycle told the New York Post that users should avoid entering any personal information on the device. Even logging into an app could put data at risk. Older phones simply were not built for today’s level of online tracking and hacking.
Apple usually considers its devices obsolete about seven years after they stop being sold. Once that happens, there is no official support, no repairs, and no spare parts. If something breaks, you are on your own.
Still, for many people, that is not the point. The iPhone 4 represents a slower, quieter time before constant notifications and endless scrolling. For them, using an old phone feels like taking a small break from modern life. As long as users know the risks, the throwback trend does not seem to be fading anytime soon.
