After delaying the rollout of its erotic chatbot feature, OpenAI has paused plans to introduce it, according to a report by the Financial Times. The move comes as the company shifts focus toward its core artificial intelligence products and addresses internal concerns around safety and societal impact.
Shift in priorities and product strategy
The decision to pause the feature reflects OpenAI’s broader shift toward prioritising its core offerings and integrating capabilities into a unified platform. The company is focusing on improving existing AI tools rather than introducing new categories that may carry higher regulatory or ethical risks. The company has recently dropped its Sora -- the AI video generator app as well as web altogether as a part of the focus shift.
While the adult mode concept has not been cancelled outright, the rollout has been delayed indefinitely or atleast that's what the report suggest.
The debate highlights ongoing tensions within the artificial intelligence industry over balancing user freedom with platform responsibility. While some platforms maintain strict restrictions on explicit content, others are exploring controlled approaches with safeguards.
Now, whether or not the feature will ever materialise and rollout to public still remains a question as of now considering OpenAI has not officially revealed any such details on this.
Internal concerns and safety risks
The proposal, internally referred to as an “adult mode” for ChatGPT, aimed to allow explicit text-based conversations for adult users. However, discussions within the company and its advisory groups raised concerns about potential risks.
Members of OpenAI’s advisory council on AI and well-being, which includes experts in psychology and neuroscience, reportedly flagged issues related to emotional dependence on chatbots. There were also warnings about the possibility of minors accessing such content despite safeguards.
