OpenAI may soon implement a mandatory identity verification process for organisations in order to access its most advanced AI models via API in the future. According to a support page published on the company’s website last week, this new verification system, referred to as Verified Organisation, provides access to the most advanced models and capabilities on the OpenAI Platform.

This new verification process from OpenAI, called Verified Organization, is “a new way for developers to unlock access to the most advanced models and capabilities on the OpenAI platform,” reads the page. OpenAI has confirmed that to verify an organisation, a government-issued ID from one of the countries supported by OpenAI’s API is required.
Further, an ID can only verify one organisation every 90 days, and not all firms will be eligible for verification. The move is likely aimed at tightening security around OpenAI’s models as they become more advanced in the future. The company has also listed several reports, which detail efforts to detect and prevent misuse of its models, including by some hacking groups used in North Korea.
The company also withdrew its services from China last year, as many malicious users from there were allegedly leveraging ChatGPT as part of their covert online surveillance and disinformation campaigns. However, this new verification process could be intended to beef up security around OpenAI’s products to prevent such sophisticated attacks or IP theft.
